A
vehicle's handling under extreme conditions is fast becoming
a very important consideration. Manufacturers constantly strive
to improve what is today recognised as one of a vehicle's
strong selling points.
Gerotek Vehicle Testing has developed standard methods of
testing vehicle handling - either subjectively or objectively.
Tests offered include:
- Double lane change test in accordance with
ISO 3888
- Slalom test
- Steady state circular test ISO 7401
- Transient response test ISO 7401 and ISO/TR
8726
- Aquaplaning test
- Directional stability test
- Braking in a turn ISO 7975
The vehicle can be fitted with transducers
(e.g. accelerometers, gyros or displacement transducers) which
measure vehicle behaviour while completing a specific manoeuvre.
The time taken to complete the manoeuvre can also be measured.
Subjective handling tests are carried out by either driving
the vehicle on a track designed for extreme handling conditions
or as part of an endurance test on national roads. The tests
are performed by trained and experienced personnel.
