Anthropometry
When designing for the human it is important to take into account the variation in body size. Owing to ethnic diversity and secular changes in local populations, it is not possible to use data from foreign populations, because the design will not fit the user population.

ERGOTECH has been involved in conducting numerous extensive anthropometric surveys amongst the South African military population as well as commercial clothing surveys. ERGOTECH is the current custodian of the South African military anthropometric database, and has extensive experience in the interpretation and application of South African anthropometric data for both clothing and design purposes. Performed a 3D Scanning survey for head data.

Africa Body Dimensions

ERGOTECH has entered into a joint partnership venture with the University of Pretoria (Department of Consumer Science) and the North West University (Department of Human Movement and Sports Science) to establish, manage and provide consultative services on a representative, South African national anthropometric database.

The initiative follows current international trends to establish nationally representative anthropometric databases. The advancement of computerized technology allows for the successful application of anthropometric data in the design and development of products and clothing with greater ease and efficiency. 3D scanner technology is the envisaged technology of choice. Likewise, there are advancements in the field of healthcare, sports science and occupational health and safety that can make use of such data within their application for the benefits of the South African people.
