Defence
Materiel Disposal (DMD), formerly known as Stock Sales, a
division of Armscor Business, has been appointed and mandated
to sell excess and obsolete defence materiel on behalf of
the Department of Defence, to the best advantage of the State.
The stock varies and includes for instance ammunition, aircraft,
spares, vessels, land and/or air-based equipment.
The sale of the defence materiel is carried out in accordance
with the requirements of government approved regulatory authorities
such as the National Conventional Arms Control Committee and
the Non-Proliferation Council.
The sales process is conducted by means of local (Defence
Related Industry) and foreign (Government to Government),
tenders and replacements. Defence Materiel Disposal also assists
with the destruction of some of the defence material.
In support of the disposal process, disposal facilities in
the form of warehouses are established, where defence materiel
is stored, controlled and managed before it is finally issued
to the client. These warehouses are used to keep various materiel,
like vehicles, aircraft and associated spares. The following
warehouses have already been established:
• 4 Vehicle Reserve Park at Main Ordnance Subdepot,
Wallmannstal (Vehicles)
• DMD Facility at 10 Air Depot in Thaba Tshwane (Air Force products)
• DMD Facility at 81 Technical Support Depot, Lyttleton (Army products)
• DMD Facility at Naval Stores Depot, Wingfield, Cape Town (Naval products)
• DMD Facility at Naval Stores Depot, Durban (Naval products)
