| Protechnik Laboratories is one
of a group of Defence Science and Technology Institutes (DSTI's)
within Armscor Defence Institutes (Pty) Ltd, and conducts project work
in the field of chemical and biological defence on behalf
of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). Protechnik
also provides technical support under contract to the South
African Council for the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass
Destruction on technical aspects related to the implementation
of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
In addition to the above, new business opportunities are explored
in the areas of contract synthesis of commercial fine chemicals,
analytical method development and analysis of commercial products
and environmental samples, and quality assurance on behalf
of commercial clients.
Thus the Laboratory specialises in:
- Protection of personnel in chemically hazardous environments
- Evaluation of protective materials and equipment
- Detection and analysis of trace amounts of hazardous chemicals
- Impregnation and characterisation of activated carbon
- Evaluation of respiratory filters and their constituent
components
- Quality assurance support for chemical defence products
- Technical support with regard to weapons of mass destruction
non-proliferation treaties
- Data collection and maintenance of an information database
on biological weapons
- Synthesis of test compounds and verification reference
standards
- Contract synthesis of organic fine chemicals
- Analysis of commercial chemical products and environmental
samples
